Planters® Peanuts Case Study

Sonoco’s new plastic packaging for Planters® Peanuts is 84 percent lighter.

Challenge:

In February 2011, Planters launched “Naturally Remarkable,” a historic brand citizenship campaign designed to raise awareness about sustainable farming practices and to achieve aggressive sustainability goals within the company itself.

Due to the weight of glass as a packaging material, Planters 16oz. and 20oz. glass peanut jars were quickly identified as viable candidates for upgrade. The challenge to Sonoco was to develop a lighter package that would not compromise Planters' targets for capacity, clarity and shelf-life.

Solution:

With packaging reduction as one of the initiative’s stated goals, Planters turned to proven packaging partner and sustainability leader, Sonoco, to help maximize their opportunities.

Planters and Sonoco share a commitment to sustainability and have a longstanding relationship that includes collaboration on many new products. For this “Naturally Remarkable” initiative, Sonoco had the capital and expertise needed to produce a sustainable container that met the company’s product protection and shelf life requirements.

Results:

Sonoco responded with a durable, lightweight plastic option that met all of Planters’ performance targets—but weighed 84 percent less. The drastic reduction in packaging materials led to a host of sustainable benefits including a 25 percent reduction in the number of trucks required to transport Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts. Additionally, Planters new plastic packaging is 100 percent recyclable and non-BPA.
